A major research report compiled by medical statistics company Dr Foster, has revealed that 16 of England’s NHS Trusts have death rates higher than would be expected for patients in their hospitals. Some others are rated badly on other issues which may contribute to raising the patient death rate. One of the poorly rated Hospital Trusts was West Hertfordshire Hospital Trust, which runs three major hospitals ie
- Hemel Hempstead Hospital
- St Albans City Hospital
- Watford General Hospital
The West Herts trust scored poorly on deaths of patients during their time in hospital.
Dr Foster looked at several variables as well as deaths in the hospitals as a whole when it came to compiling their report, such as deaths in the hours and days following a surgical procedure, deaths among lower risk groups who would have been expected to survive their hospital treatment, and deaths within 30 days of a patient going home after treatment. All of this data also showed that 10 Trusts in England have hospitals with higher death rates than when the death rates over the trust are considered as a whole.
Dr Mike Van Der Watt, who is employed as Medical Director of the West Herts NHS Trust, responded to the poor figures for the Trust’s hospitals by making it clear that the Trust respected the Dr Foster report, and had as a consequence put into action many new measures and procedures to keep mortality rates among patients at as low a level as possible.
