Bournemouth breast cancer misdiagnosis – hundreds of women may be affected

    Published on: 09/05/2013

A hospital in Bournemouth has advised 272 women to return for breast cancer checks after concerns were raised that a junior doctor may have wrongly told them that they did not have cancer.

The cancer misdiagnosis concerns relate to patients screened between January 2011 and July 2012 and letters have been sent to those thought to be affected.

The male junior doctor in question told the patients who came to the breast clinic at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital that they did not have breast cancer – however it now appears that he did not carry out all of the necessary tests during the screening process.

The possible failures were first noticed by consultants who were unhappy with the way that the junior doctor had assessed some of his patients. The medic, who is yet to be named, is no longer employed at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and was, it now appears, the subject of numerous complaints dating up to July 2012. The General Medical Council has now placed the junior doctor under investigation and the Royal College of Surgeons is expected to become involved as well.
